New Years Resolution?

Should you create a New Years Resolution?

January 08, 20244 min read

A Forbes poll showed that 61.7% of us of us feel pressured to set one and the Associated Press wrote that only 8% stick with their new year’s resolutions. So the stats are not in our favor!

Whether you want create a resolution, revise your current goals or set goals in the future consider praying about it first. Some things to ponder and pray about are:

  • Is this a good time to add something additional?

  • Are your current/future goals aligned with your purpose?

  • Do you have a clear sense of purpose / who you want to become?

  • What has the Lord shown you that you need to work on?

  • Do you have time to add another item to your to do list?

  • What do you need to let go of so you have margin to work on something new?

  • Do you have peace about starting something new or a sense of restraint in your spirit ?

Purpose should be the north star guiding you. Do you know why the Lord put you on this earth? If not, taking time to get clear on purpose / the person you want to become will set a healthy foundation for setting and achieving  goals.   The most successful goals are goals that are aligned with our values and purpose.

Purpose is often a blend of passions, gifts, talents, and  life experiences. Purpose can change over time so don’t be afraid to reassess yours periodically. One of the best ways to find your purpose is in doing a life review. Make an outline of all your life events including the things you learned and how you grew as a person. The Lord often transforms our pain into purpose.

and provide for those who grieve in Zion to bestow on them a crown of beauty
instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise
instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness,
a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor.

ISA 61:3

I've noticed people who are most successful at achieving their goals

1)    Have a compelling reason for achieving their goal

2)    Remind themselves of their goals daily

3)    Create goals that are aligned with their purpose/values

4)    Break bigger goals into bite size pieces/systems that work for their life

5)    Identify their potential obstacles and make a plan for each of them

6)    When they have a miss they learn from it, apply what they learned going forward and and try again

7)    They make the journey enjoyable

8)    They work on their mindset daily

9)    They celebrate their wins

10) They track their progress / are accountable

11) They are ok with maintaining vs making forward progress when the unexpected happens

Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 3:13-14

ADDITIONAL TOOLS FOR MAINTAINING SUCCESS

CREATE SMART GOALS

The more specific your goals are the higher your likelihood of success. As you create your goals include the following elements:

Specific – who, what, when, where, or why

Measurable – how will you measure success? How will you know you have met the goal?

Are your goals Attainable and Realistic and what Resources do you need?

Timeline – what is the timeline for each action step. What day will you start and what day(s) / time(s) will you perform each step?

DAILY AFFIRMATIONS

Create affirmations that support who you are becoming. Keep them somewhere you will see and read daily. (bathroom mirror or your phone screen saver) Saying them out loud is even more powerful!

VISUALIZATION

Spend time visualizing yourself successfully walking out your goals for 2-3 minutes each day. This is mentally rehearsing your success and creating new neural pathways!

SPEND TIME WITH LIKE MINDED PEOPLE
Who do you know that is successful in the areas you want to improve? Consider spending time with them or with a group of likeminded people on a regular basis

“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with." - Jim Rohn

CREATE AN ENVIRONMENT THAT SUPPORTS YOUR SUCCESS

How can you set up your environment to make it easier to accomplish your goals? Is there anything in your current environment that could cause you to stumble?

KEEP A GROWTH MINDSET

"I never lose, I either win or learn." - Nelson Mandela

When you stumble, remember this quote. Reframe your mistakes into learning opportunities. Be curious not critical. What did you learn in the situation that can help you going forward?

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
